Student Parent Mentorship for Success program to match mentors with student parents.

(Niagara Falls, Ontario – December 8th, 2017)

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara Falls will be adding to their mentoring program offerings in the New Year by matching mentors with student parents. Partnering with Strive Niagara, this pilot program will see Big Brothers Big Sisters matching volunteer mentors with young mothers in Niagara Falls. “We are very excited about this program, as we believe that it is innovative, and will not only positively impact the lives of these young women, but ultimately, their children as well.” commented Jon Braithwaite, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara Falls, “The great thing about this program is that it represents a collaboration between two organizations providing crucial programs in our community.

By working together, we will have even greater impact on those in Niagara Falls in need of a mentor.” Thanks to funding received from the Branscombe Family Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters aims to recruit 7-10 women interested in mentoring student parents. Once approved as a volunteer, they would then receive specific training from Strive Niagara staff, and be matched with a Student Parent who is attending programs provided by Strive Niagara. Professional staff from both agencies will provide ongoing support to the Mentor as well as the Student Parent in an effort to ensure the success of the match.

Sandy Toth, Executive Director from Strive Niagara, echoed Braithwaite’s comments. “Strive Niagara is thrilled to be working with Big Brothers Big Sisters in such a creative way to further the supports we provide to the student parents who access our program. This Mentoring approach has such a ripple effect, the benefits are far reaching not only to just the student parent, it will also have an impact on their children.”
